CAPTAIN EDDIE'S FISHING REPORTS-2000
October 26
Fished with Gene from High Point on Thursday. We caught 23 flounder, keeping 5 of them. Gene fished with me a few weeks ago. The water temp was 66 degrees and the wind N at 5-10 MPH. We fished the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks. See the results!
October 19
Fished on Friday with William and Howard from Hoke County, NC. We caught 12 flounder and a nice speckled trout, keeping 4 of them. We forgot to take the picture before we cleaned the fish so we ended up with a nice picture of them in front of the Shady Lady. Wind was about 10MPH out of NE and water temp 70 degrees. Here is the picture of William and Howard and the Shady Lady!
October 18
Fished on Thursday with Glenn and Don from Virginia. We caught 21 flounder, with 5 nice keepers. We had a lot of them just under the 13-inch minimum. The weather was beautiful and we really enjoyed the day. The water temp was 70 degrees and the wind NE at 10MPH. Click here for the results!
October 12-16
VACATION!! My oldest son Kevin and myself left on Thursday morning and camped until Monday drum fishing on the South Core Banks. We caught red drum, black drum, whiting, pompano, croakers and flounder. I didn't take the digital camera so I will post the pictures when the film is developed.
October 7
Woke up to a brisk and windy morning. Fished a half day with Pat and Bob from Conway, SC. We caught 9 flounder, keeping 4 nice ones. The day started out cold but turned into a mild and very enjoyable day of fishing! See our results!
October 6
Fished today with Gene from High Point. We caught 14 flounder, with 3 keepers. We had a good time talking about the "good ole days" when the fishing was really good down at Cherry Grove. (now North Myrtle Beach) Here are some pics!
October 4
I've been on "vacation" this past week (last week in Sept.), fishing on Portsmouth Island. Arrived back at Holden's Beach this week and fished Monday at artificial reef off Yaupon Beach, catching 38 croakers. Then today Capt. Richard from Laurinburg and Capt. Eddie decided to find the flounder! We caught 16, keeping 6 of them. We're finally getting over the effects of the fresh water. The fish seem to be biting better on incoming tide. The Captains with their catches!
September 14
On Thursday, I fished with friends, Jurney, Mike and Frank. Mike, Frank and I were on a football team that went to the state playoffs, too many years ago to mention! And Jurney was always there to cheer us on. Mike showed his expertise with the cast net, catching mullet to be used for drum fishing at a later date. We caught 3 flounder and enjoyed the day reminiscing. Here are some pictures from the day.
September 13
With Hurricane Florence lurking about 300 miles off the coast, and creating dangerous riptides (3 people drowned on NC coast), I fished on Wednesday with Jeff and Ron from Cleveland, Ohio. The weather was in the high 80's, wind E at 10-15 MPH, and the water temp 79 degrees. There is still lots of fresh water from the past rains. We caught 4 flounder, keeping 3, with the biggest around 3 lbs. Here are some pictures of the results.
August 31
We received another 5 inches of rain this week. The water was finally getting back to optimum conditions, then the rain! But let's look at the pluses. It is cooling down the water temperature---cooled from 86.5 degrees to 80 degrees in the past 3 weeks. It has moved the fish into a more concentrated area and forced me to fish harder to find them. Which is what we did today. Fishing with William and Ronnie from Maxton, NC, we caught 10 flounder. Mullet are in the waterway. The spots and croaker are showing up. And the next couple of weeks should be excellent fishing. Today the wind was out of the south at 10-20 MPH. Check out the results!
August 21
Fished with Fred and Danny from Wilmington, and Kevin from Raleigh, today. We had a refreshing 6-mile ride down the ditch (IntraCoastal Waterway) to the Shallotte River. The wind was out of the NE which helped clear the water even more since Friday. More bait fish were visible and as a result, more flounder. We caught 11 flounder, the biggest being around 4 lbs. Things are looking better and let's hope Debbie doesn't come our way! Here are the results!!
August 18
Fished with Frank and son, Seth from Charlotte today. We caught 6 flounder, fishing the mouth of the inlet, Sauce Pan Creek, Gibbs Creek, and the Shallotte River. Wind was out to the NE, water temp at 80 degrees, and weather temp in upper 80's. The water is clearing up now and the fish will be more abundant because of it. Check out the catch here.
August 4-5
Rain! Rain! Rain! That's the story of the last two weeks---14 inches falling in the Holden's Beach area! The fish have been pushed out into the waterway and into the inlet. The bait fish have disappeared too. Where there are bait fish, there are flounder. So my report is not very good this week. Brian and I fished during a small gap in the thunderstorms on Friday and caught 3 flounder and several of us fished on Saturday with 3 flounder being caught. The muddy water caused by the rains should be clearing up this week so hopefully next week will be a good fishing week. Here is a picture of what we caught on Friday.
July 19
We found the BIG flounder today!! I thought the 8 lb. 12 oz. that I netted on June 27th and the 6 lb. 12 oz. on July 4th were nice (and they were) but today we caught a 11 1/2 lb. (weight after 4 hrs. in the cooler) monster that scared me when he came out of the shadows. I fished with Charlie and Robert, from Watha, NC, father-and-son fishing team, both catching citation flounder, Charlie's being 11 1/2 lb. and Robert's being 5 1/2 lb. It's nice to know that got them excited, knowing they had caught hundreds of red drum in the 40 and 50-inch categories, but light tackle and nice fish can do it! Charlie ("Lost Boy"), in my book, is the "king" of Portsmouth Island, from Sept. to Dec., at catching red drum. If you are interested in catching some nice drum in the surf, I can put you in touch with him. He put me on a 42-inch drum on Portsmouth Island. The only question in my mind is how big was the flounder that Robert had on, that we never saw! Maybe he is waiting for YOU to catch!! Oh, by the way, we caught 9 keeper flounder, one drum and one Spanish, fishing the mouth of the inlet and Shallotte River, near the oyster house. The water temp was 84-86 degrees, air temp at 95 degrees, weather clear, and wind SW at 0 increasing to 20 during the day. Be sure to look at these pictures!!
July 18
Fished today with Jonathan, from Durham, NC. We fished the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks. The weather was beautiful, with temp in the low 90's, water temp at 85 degrees, and wind at 5 increasing to 20 MPH. Jonathan caught his first drum on a cranking stick with a 5500C Garcia reel. It was Jonathan and the drum and sometimes the drum and Jonathan! We caught 9 flounder and 2 nice drum. You can tell from the expression on his face in the pictures that he really had a good time! He said his Granny was going to cook some for him!
July 13
Fished with Tom of Atlanta today. The temperature was in the 80's, water temp was 80.5 and wind was 5 increasing to 20 MPH out of the north changing to NE. Rain moved in about 1:00 but being with a experienced duck hunter, we kept fishing since there was no lightning. The rain got harder and harder and HARDER! Again the T-top made it bearable. Tom caught 9 flounder (6 being nice keepers) and a nice speckled trout. I have openings available and am using my spare time to locate some large fish. Fishing for large fish may not net large quantities but may pay off with a trophy flounder. It's up to the client as to what we shoot for. I want you to be happy! So far everyone seems to be. If you can't contact me online, you may want to call the beach number (910-842-9572). See the results for today by clicking here!
July 7
Fished with Jurney and Andy today. Jurney is a repeat customer so I must be doing something right!! Water temp was 82.5, wind NNE at 5-10 MPH. Caught 7 fish with 5 keepers. Fished the Shallotte River. Click here to see the pics!
July 1
Fished with our kids, Kevin and Kristy, and friend Bob today, with 9 keepers caught. Kevin caught the biggest flounder, weighing in around 5 lbs. Kristy and Bob caught some nice keepers too, the biggest being 18 inches. This report is sorta misplaced because we lost the disc for the pictures, but finally found it! :) Click here to see the nice flounder!
July 4
We really had the fireworks for July 4th! We had the flounder doing drum rolls in the boat!! Fished with a party of four. Caught 18 flounder and had 8 keeper flounder plus a nice drum. We caught one 6 lb. 12 oz. flounder and two 4 pounders. The weather was nice and in the 80's, water temperature was 81 degrees and wind was SW at 5-15 MPH. We fished the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks and inlets. Click here for pictures!
July 3
I fished with Bill, Sr., Bill and his son, Ashley, from Columbia, SC---three generations---of nice folks today! We caught 7 flounder, keeping 5 of them. The weather was in the high 80's, water temperature was 82 degrees, and the wind out of the SW at 5-15 MPH. We fished the Shallotte River. See the pictures here!
July 2
Fished with my kids, Kristy and Kevin, friend Bob, and my wife, Donna, today. We caught 8 flounder, keeping five. The weather was in the high 80's, water temp was 82 degrees and wind out of SW at 5-15 MPH. Pictures here!
June 27
Fished on Tuesday with brother William and his brother-in-law Ronnie, who are both excellent fishermen. The water temperature was 86.5 degrees, the wind was out of the SW at 5-10MPH, and it was around 87 degrees (it was hot enough for me to realize I had done the right thing by putting the T-top on my boat). We fished the Shallotte River with mud minnows and light bass tackle. We caught 5 flounder and numerous blues. The largest flounder was 8 lbs, 12 oz., which we caught in the Shallotte Point area. We weighed him at TRIPP'S FISHING CENTER three hours after we caught him and after he "spit up" a 6 oz. spot and our mud minnow. Mr. Daught Tripp, who is 87-years-old and an fish expert, said he would have weighed 10 lbs. by the end of the summer. Mr. Tripp and Joyce operate Tripp's Fishing Center and have excellent bait and advice. We didn't weigh the big blue but look at the pictures here! They both made the drag sing my favorite song on the reel like a finely tuned fiddle! This report is a little early because I am going to be fishing from Sat.-Mon. and just had to let you guys know about the big flounder!
June 23
Fished on Friday with Cary of Charlotte. Weather and water conditions about the same as Thursday. We caught 4 flounder and 1 trout and were harrassed by pinfish and blues all day. I really enjoyed both trips this week and hope to see these guys on the water again. Thunderstorms earlier in the week and Thursday night may have hurt the fishing. A little rain always seems to help the fishing but maybe it was too much of a good thing! Sometimes it makes you scratch your head when you want the nice folks to catch lots of fish. But as I told Cary, if he, or anyone that has fished with me, is going fishing and gives me a call, I will tell them when, where and how they are biting. Due to remote pickups this week, no pictures were taken of the catches.
June 22
I took out Bunny, Aaron and Ed from Hoffmann on Thursday. The weather was in the 80's, water temp was 80.5 degrees, and the wind out of the SW at 5-15 MPH. We fished the Shallotte River, surrounding creeks and the waterway. We caught 8 flounder. They got the chance to meet two of the graduates of my fishing school, Brian and Wormy!
June 16
Fished with Lib and Earl on Friday. I knew I had an expert trout fisherman on board the way she played the nice trout in the picture on the lightweight bass tackle. We also caught 15 flounder with the nicest shown in the picture. Earl was taking a lot of heat until he landed the largest flounder! He said something about someone's nickname being "Lucky". The water temperature was 76 degrees and warming to 82 in the shallows. The wind was in the 20s out of the SSW so we found a creek that worked for us with just enough breeze to keep the sandfleas from having a buffet! Click here for results!
June 15
Fished with Doug and Grover on Thursday.
The weather was in the 80's and the water temp around 76 degrees. They caught 10 flounder and several blues fishing with mud minnows in the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks. Wind was SSW up to 23 MPH. They got away before I could make a glamour shot!
June 9-10
Captain Eddie, sons Kevin and Matthew, and friend Brian, fished in the 17th Annual Shallotte Point VFD Flounder Tournament, out of Tripp's Fishing Center. We caught 32 flounder (17 keepers over 13 inches) on Friday and 31 flounder (10 keepers over 13 inches) on Saturday. We won 3rd place in Most Fish Caught out of 115 boats with 27 fish turned in. Second place had 28 fish and first place was 40 fish. The winner of the largest fish brought in a 9.3 lb. flounder. The wind was out of the southwest 5 to 10 knots and the water temp was 76-78 degrees. We fished four rods with mud minnows and mullet minnows with the fish preferring the mud minnows. Because of time limits in bringing in the fish and weighing in, we were not able to take pictures of these fish.
June 7
With the weather in the 80's and the water temp at 76 degrees, Captain Eddie took out a party of two aboard the Shady Lady. They caught 9 flounder-the biggest being 4.6 lbs., and a very nice trout on mud minnows, slow trolled in the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks. They were taken for a half-mile (57 min.) boat ride by a large skate (about 4 ft. in diameter). It was a thrill for the party but cut into our fishing time. Wind was out of the northeast 15 to 25 knots but we found a creek that would make it work for us. Click here for the pictures!
June 3
My son Kevin and our fishing buddy Brian entered and won the Holden's Beach Fishing Club Annual Fishing Tournament! They won in these categories: BIGGEST FISH, MOST POUNDS, AND CALCUTTA. And they even gave me a little credit! I hope to have some pictures of this tournament soon.
May 31
My son Kevin and I caught a 5-pounder, 2 18-inch, 1 16-inch and 1 14-inch flounder today. Then I headed home to mow the grass and do some other work on our farm. Planning on being back in the water by June 7. Click here for the results!

help get rid of the seaweed. Click here to see the results!
