CAPTAIN EDDIE'S FISHING REPORTS-2001

Final Fishing Report for 2001

I hope everyone is having a Merry Christmas and looking forward to a Happy New Year. This has been a year of highs and lows with the terrorist bombings and losing my best friend of 32 years, Steve, who was one of the best fishermen I have known. We spent hundreds of hours on the water.

On the bright side I have met some nice people from all walks of life with stories that I really enjoyed, from being in a tank at the Battle of Bulge to a young boy catching his first spanish mackerel. I call you all, from 6 years old to 83, my fishing buddies. We all have one thing in common. We love to catch fish!

Since I have shut down for the winter I have been trout fishing with Captain Randy and striper fishing with Ben at Lake Murray. See striper picture. I can hook you up with him if you are interested.

Another fishing buddy of mine, Lost Boy, caught the flounder of a lifetime. He topped the 11 1/2 lb. flounder he caught with me with a 17 1/2 lb., 33-inch length and 30-inch girth flounder on one of our rigs at Portsmouth Island. See pictures.

I am looking forward to 2002 being a banner year. The state record flounder is 20 lb. 8 oz. and I think it is in jeopardy. There are some big fish out there and we need to catch them.

Watch out for news of my new domain coming soon: flounderguide.com

Tight lines, Captain Eddie

November 8, 2001

Fished today with Cozel and Ron from Dillon, SC. Air temp ranged from 42-74 degrees, wind was out of WSW at 5-8 mph, and the water temp ranged from 59-61 degrees. The water was crystal clear and the fish bit. We caught 15, keeping 2. Nine of the throw-backs were between 12 and 13 inches. It was a nice day on the water and had a nice lunch of fresh scallops at CW's at Hughes Marina. Click here for picture.

Met Gene from High Point at Hughes Marina and after a nice waterfront breakfast we hit the water. The day was perfect. The wind was out of the SW at 10-15 mph and the air temp was around 83 degrees, with the water temp at 69 degrees. Gene caught the fish today, catching 16 flounder! I am going on vacation next week to Portsmouth Island. Yes, you guessed it! Fishing for red drum. So email my wife and schedule a trip. It looks like the fall fishing is going to be excellent. We caught 4 flounder and quite a few nice blues and too many lizzard fish. Click here for picture.

I fished this morning with Joe and Andrew from High Point, NC. The wind was howling out of the north at 25-31 mph from the tropical storm just off the coast. We went up the Shallotte River to escape some of the wind. Joe manned the front of the boat with his fly rod as Andrew and I trolled minnows off the stern. Joe hooked up with a Red on a fly he had tied and Andrew caught 3 flounder. It was a nice morning in spite of the cold front. Click here for picture.

The wind was NE at 15-20 MPH. We caught 12 flounder with 5 being nice. #13 got away and "he" thought Friday the 13th wasn't so unlucky after all. Click here for the pictures.

We fished the Shallotte River and surrounding creeks. The water temp was 82.5 and the wind out of the SSE at 5-15 MPH. We caught 15 flounder with 5 being keepers. The recent rains are still keeping the water from the rivers murky. The bite did not start until 2 hours after the tide started clearing the waters. Come and see the pictures of the nice fish.

July 6, 2001

Fished with Ronnie and Gary from Salisbury, NC. I found out why the fish were eating it up yesterday. About lunchtime the skies became dark and the bottom fell out! We spent the afternoon at the Dock 77 Restaurant watching the rain and lightning. Later we made a 7-mile run for the Holden's Beach ramp where the temperature dropped 20 degrees from the hail in the front. I think the cold front and the hot air created a tropical storm with the way the air was rotating. There was a waterspout/tornado at Myrtle Beach at about this time. It rained 3 1/2 inches in the gauge in less than an hour. We caught 5 flounder, with 2 being nice. Click here for picture.

After lunch, I was informed that the "Guiding Light" comes on at 3:00 and we just could not miss the Bauer's 4th of July Barbeque. So we left the fish biting! Here are the pictures!

The water temp was 82 degrees with SW wind 5-10MPH. The water has cleared up from the heavy rains a week ago. Fishing slowed in incoming tide due to a much needed dredge working the channel inlet, effecting the water clarity. Click here for the results.

Fished with Bill; daughter, Cecily; and her husband, Tripp, in the AM, with Bill and son, Ashley, fishing the afternoon. These nice folks are from Columbia, SC. May 19, 2001

Today, my son Kevin, fishing buddy Brian and I fished the Holden's Beach Fishing Club Spring Tournament. We caught 28 flounder and 2 puppy drum. We missed first place by 2 tenths of a lb, placing third for big fish. We won the Calcutta for the aggregate weight of the three largest fish by two pounds.
